Ancient Traps of Adriatic Sea (ATAS project) is a EU funded project with the aim to create thematic touristic route on Adriatic underwater archaeological heritage from Antique period.

The main idea is to create a common online platform for a Network of Adriatic destinations with main objective to enable SMEs and institutions to promote their touristic services to the specific target audience. The more specific objectives are to increase overall visibility of underwater heritage and raise awareness of its preservation, enhance diversification in tourism offer, improve competitiveness and enable destinations to extend their season and for SMEs to keep full employment for a longer period.

With building a Network of destinations connected under the same “Antique Traps of Adriatic Sea” umbrella the project raises awareness of transnational European Antique Underwater Heritage and create synergies provoking more interest and reinforcing this specific Cultural Heritage as motive for travel.

ATAS project gathers together a public-private consortium from 4 destinations in Adriatic sea with the objective to provide sustainable promotional support to local SMEs, which SMEs cannot afford individually.

Destinations currently included in the project are Mali Lošinj (Island of Lošinj, Croatia),  Prvić Luka (Island of Prvić, Croatia), Izola (Slovenia), Budva (Montenegro). All locations have a developed scuba offer (through licensed diving clubs) and all of them have multiple underwater archeological sites that are of interest to divers and tourist in general, but still not well established at European tourism market. Two of destinations have an scuba archeological park (up to 5m depth) suitable for tourists and amateur divers. Museums and other exposition areas are also present, as well as historical background.

Partner’s consortium developed variety of activities like networking, educational workshops and market research in order to conceptualize, develop and promote new Adriatic tourism product based on antique underwater heritage.

Having in mind many Adriatic and Mediterranean antique underwater locations not known to public and not used in tourism, the ATAS Network hopes to attract more of Adriatic destinations with ancient heritage and serve as an online platform for tourist valorization and promotion of antique underwater heritage.
